KAMENI
ISLAND
The closer you get to the peak, the stronger the smell of sulphur from
the two craters becomes, from various points of which smoke and gas rise
from the volcano.
This is where the tourist boat trips usually end. However, you may carry
on south along the path until you reach the small bay at Taxiarhes, but
do this with care because there are certain lava blocks that are quite
unsteady.
It is useful to have with you the informative guide to the volcano pro-duced
by the Institute for the Study and Observation of the Santorini Volcano
that also includes a detailed map of the various pathways as well as
related information.
